Man, the world is a divided place.
That’s a sad reality of the modern era—one that seems to worsen by the day. And frankly, it doesn’t feel like anyone in power is doing anything meaningful to stop it.
I was reminded of just how deeply divided we are when I witnessed two people get into a heated argument over some of the most sensitive and polarizing issues of our time. And to be honest, it really upset me. Not just because of what they were saying, but because it was yet another example of how far we’ve drifted from understanding and compassion.
Personally, I just want to help people. I don’t care about their race, gender, religion, or any other label society wants to slap on them. That’s not to say those things aren’t important—they absolutely are. But I don’t want to see them as barriers to helping someone. We all deserve kindness. We all deserve opportunities.
What’s concerning to me, and what I think many overlook, is how much our mental health is being shaped by the toxic environment we’ve built—especially online.
The Death of Nuance
We live in the age of one-liners and hot takes. A time where a four-word meme can be shared millions of times with the assumption that everyone will understand its deeper meaning.
But let’s face it—they don’t.
And that’s a big part of the problem. Our most serious societal issues are being reduced to buzzwords, slogans, and tweets. Complex topics that demand careful thought are instead thrown into the outrage machine for clicks and shares.
This lack of nuance feeds division. It forces people into corners where they must either agree 100% with something or risk being labeled or attacked. And for people struggling with their mental health, this environment is a minefield.
The Rise of Trolling and Digital Sabotage
It’s not just about memes and misunderstanding—it’s also about manipulation.( Read: Me, Me, Me Memes).
Trolling is everywhere. It’s no longer limited to political debates or controversial topics. People with harmful intentions are now swarming comment sections across the internet—on everything from social justice posts to baking videos to car enthusiast pages.
Why? Because division is the goal.
These trolls exist to keep us angry, anxious, and at odds with one another. And unfortunately, they’re winning.
The more time we spend arguing online, the more disconnected we become in real life. The more fear and frustration we absorb through our screens, the more overwhelmed and helpless we feel.
This is the perfect storm for a mental health crisis, and we’re already living in it.
So, What Can We Do?
The answer isn’t easy, but it starts with changing how we think, talk, and act—both online and offline.
1. Promote Empathy Over Identity
See people for who they are—not just what they are. Let compassion lead. Human connection is one of the strongest protectors against depression, anxiety, and loneliness.
2. Push for Deeper Conversations
Don’t settle for soundbites. Encourage dialogue that allows for complexity and growth. We’re all still learning.
3. Educate Ourselves on Media Literacy
Know how to recognize manipulation. Understand how trolls operate. Teach others how to navigate digital spaces without falling into fear or hate.
4. Hold Social Media Giants Accountable
Governments need to do more than talk about misinformation and harassment—they need to legislate change. We can’t afford to keep letting corporations profit from outrage while people suffer.
5. Support Online Moderation
We need safer, more constructive online spaces. That starts with better moderation and algorithms that reward thoughtfulness, not rage.
6. Celebrate Positive Contributions
Let’s make kindness and insight go viral for a change. When we uplift constructive voices, we create a healthier culture—for everyone.

We are living in an era where division has been weaponized. But we can’t let ourselves be pulled apart by it—not when so many are already struggling silently with their mental health.

And we all deserve to feel safe, heard, and whole.
